![]() GENERAL CHILDREN YOUTH SUNDAY MORNING
Funeral Committee Churches United for the Homeless CHILDREN Preschool-4th Grade Sunday School Teacher or Substitute Teacher Being a Sunday School teacher is a year long commitment to educating children in the Christian faith, and it is a privilege and a responsibility to be taken seriously. Sunday School begins Sept. 9, 2007-May 11, 2008. The education hour is 9:45-10:45am each Sunday, with the exception of Nov. 25 (Thanksgiving holiday); Dec. 23 & 30 (Christmas holiday); and Mar. 23, 2008 (Easter holiday). There is a teacher training time for each grade level (preschool-4th grade) in August. This is a time to meet team leaders and other teachers, learn about the basics of teaching Sunday School, and plan the curriculum for the year with your team leader and teaching partners. Sunday School teachers need to: 1) Relate to and interact with children; 2) Provide a warm and caring atmosphere in which children can learn; 3) Work with their team leader and grade level teachers to develop lesson plans that follow a curriculum outline provided by the director of Children’s Ministries. Team teaching a Sunday School class can be arranged by request. Substitute teaching is also an important ministry. Lesson plans are provided, but it is important to be flexible and ready for anything! The Sunday School Supply Room has a variety of materials that can be used any time, and the superintendents and other teachers are always ready to share ideas and help find materials. If you enjoy being with children and have a desire to share your faith, we need you! Please call Lisa Sandgren at 235-6603. WOW or WOWee Leader/Helper Wow and Wowee are exciting programs at Olivet that are designed for children in preschool-6th grade. Every Wednesday night, from 4:30-5:30, we meet for tons of fun, music, bible experience times, friends and more. There are 3 components to Wow and Wowee: Bible Experience Time, Recreation and Music! Parents and Adults - you are the ones that make this program happen! If you have an interest in working with this program, we would love to have your involvement! Here are some of the areas that we could use your help: being a small group leader for 8-10 children (no preparation time, materials provided); helping with music time or recreation time; selling pizza at the Olivet Café on Wednesday nights (3:30-6:00). Call Lisa Sandgren or Michelle Elness at 235-6603. Nursery Volunteer If you love small children and are looking for a way to plug in a few times a year, volunteering in the nursery is the perfect fit for you! Playing with the young children at Olivet is a rewarding and important job. The biggest need for nursery workers is on Sunday mornings, including shifts from 8:15-9:30 a.m., 9:30-10:45 a.m., and 10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. These shifts are available in either the infant or toddler nurseries. There are also times during the week that the nursery is open. Please consider if this is a place for you! If you are interested in helping, please call Judy Hauschulz at 235-6603. Sunday School Christmas Program Each year, the Sunday School children present a Christmas program in December. It is a wonderful time to gather children and families together to celebrate the birth of Christ. There are many ways and opportunities for you to help out! If you are interested in helping out with music, program, costumes or serving food for the Sunday school program, please contact Lisa Sandgren at 235-6603. YOUTH 10th Grade Small Group Confirmation Leader Wednesday nights from 6:30-8pm we need leaders to spend time with your small group of 5-8 students caring and mentoring them as positive role models for their Christian lives. The first half of each session we will be together in a large group, then we will break into small groups. Materials and discussion questions will be provided. You only need to provide your gift of caring! Call Amy at 235-6603. 7th-10th Grade Mentor Are you willing to share your life with a young person? If so, consider being a mentor. We all need people around us as examples of active faith lives. We all need strong, supportive relationships to share our struggles with. Studies have shown that one of the most important steps in a students life is to connect them with a healthy adult in a mentoring relationship. As adults, we learn a lot about ourselves when we work with students and their struggles. The expectations of a mentor are as follows: 1) Throughout the year, you are asked to attend two Wednesday Mentor Nights at Olivet. These nights, students will bring their mentors to confirmation. Mentors will participate with students in discussions and activities pertaining to faith and the importance of relationships! 2) To build your relationship with your student, you will be asked to get together at least 5 times throughout the year outside of our classtime together. We ask that the two of you do the following: do one service project of your choice together; go out to eat together once or more; do something recreational together (golfing, fishing, walking, roller blading, photography, mini-golf, etc.); participate in some activity at the church together (worship, Family Faith Night, service project, Christmas Eve Dinner, Lenten dinners, etc.); you will also be asked to attend the Confirmation Banquet and Service for your student. If interested call Amy at 235-6603. 7-9th Grade Small Group Confirmation Leader Confirmation leaders are expected to facilitate group discussion and foster relationships by becoming a positive Christian role model to the 5-8 youths in their small group. The time commitment is every Wednesday starting September 12th - May 7th. These small groups meet from 6:30-8pm. Call Amy at 235-6603. Trip Chaperone Do you like to travel and experience new things? You can do this as well as grow in faith and develop wonderful relationships with great kids. Our trips vary from 2-3 days to 7-10 days, and include youth gatherings both regional and national, retreats, Habitat for Humanity projects and others. All trips are a mix of fun, faith, and service. Costs vary with each event. As a trip chaperone, you will be involved in small group discussions and devotions, and "hanging out with" the kids by being a positive role model for them. These experiences will change your lives! Call Amy at 235-6603. 7-9th Grade Sunday School Teacher & Substitute “ It takes a village to raise a child” Do you like to encourage young people on their faith journey? Consider being a part of a team, to teach our 7th-9th graders on Sunday mornings. Combining a plethera of different curriculum styles--activities, games, movies, bible studies and more, we aim to dig deeper into what our faith means. There will be a training/orientation for all teachers (specifically geared for teachers of Jr. High classes) to meet the other teachers, learn the curriculum, and gather some helpful classroom hints. Please let us know if you are interested in subbing for teachers if the need arises. Sunday School beginsat 9:45am and is done at 10:45am. There are a few Sundays during the year that we do not have Sunday School, including holidays, such as Christmas, Easter, Thanksgiving and others. Teaching Sunday School is a great way to share your faith with young people! Call Amy at 235-6603. Wednesday Pizza Sales Olivet Café workers will be needed on Wednesday evenings from 3:30-5:00pm. They will be in charge of selling food items in the café, and cleaning the café as needed. Call Amy at 235-6603. SUNDAY MORNINGS Sunday Coffee Server Each Sunday in between church services (9:30am-11am), coffee and donuts are served in the Lounge and in the Fellowship Hall. We need your help in setting up, serving and doing a little cleanup afterwards. Hospitality is the main duty of the Coffee Servers. This can be a one time job, or as many times as you wish. Michelle Elness will help you find the dates that work best, 235-6603. Celebrate! Worship Team Singers and instrumentalists of all ages are invited! The musicians are divided into four teams, each team leading the Celebrate! service once a month, year 'round. Rehearsal times are on Wednesdays at 7:00pm in the church sanctuary. Contact Lisa Overby Scripture Reader This is a wonderful way to share in the ministry of Olivet by reading God’s word during worship services. Readers are needed every Sunday year ‘round, and at each service. Scripture is given to you early in the week so that you may read and practice at home, or in the sanctuary if you prefer. This is a job that can be done by all age groups. It requires good reading skills and feeling comfortable reading in front of a large group. Consider this ministry if this describes you. Michelle Elness will help you find the best date(s), 235-6603. Greeter A warm welcome and kind greeters are an important part of Sunday morning worship. As a greeter you have a wonderful opportunity to extend kindness to everyone who enters Olivet’s doors. Coming in 20 minutes before worship begins, and extending your hand are the requirements of a greeter. Please let Michelle Elness know when you would like to volunteer, 235-6603. Communion Preparer Preparation of communion is done at your convenience a few days prior to communion Sunday. Wine and juice glasses are poured, and communion wafers are placed in the serving trays. This is a great job for a family to do together, and takes approximately one hour. Call Michelle Elness if you would like this opportunity, 235-6603. Usher This important role at worship services requires a warm smile and hospitality. Ushers are welcoming assistants to those who may be visiting, or are new to Olivet. They are a friendly smile and helper to our current members. An usher’s job is to hand out bulletins, help people find seats, collect offering, direct people during communion, help pick up in the sanctuary after service, and be an assistant to the staff of Olivet when needed. This job is needed every Sunday at each service year ‘round. Ushers can do this job one month at a time or just one time. You set the schedule. It’s fun to get a group and usher together. Bring some friends, or join an existing team. Call Michelle Elness and set up a time best for you, 235-6603. Communion Server If you are interested in assisting in worship on communion Sundays, you may want to volunteer as a communion server. Servers attend the worship service at which they are serving. Then come back to the Sacristy area of the church during offering. Instructions are given by a coordinator, and then the server offers bread or wine to worshippers who come to receive Holy Communion. This is done on the 1st and 3rd Sunday’s of the month. Contact Michelle Elness for coordinator names, 235-6603. |
