BeFriender position description

Position: BeFriender Minister

Responsible to: BeFriender Ministry leadership team.

Purpose of position: To provide a ministry of listening presence to persons during life transitions or when a pastoral visit is desired.

Responsibilities
1. Participate in training sessions.
2. Meet with program leader to discern together whether to become a commissioned BeFriender.
3. Be accountable for growth as a BeFriender Minister.
4. Lead prayer as requested.
5. Participate in Making Meaning sessions using a confidentially written visit brought by you or
another group member.
6. Participate in continuing education sessions.
7. Keep accurate, confidential records as requested.
8. Report to BeFriender leadership team any concerns regarding a BeFriender visit.
9. Participate in evaluation process as requested.
10. Adhere to policies and procedures of the BeFriender Ministry program.

Qualifications
1. Respectful of persons and their dignity and value.
2. Able to maintain healthy boundaries in relationships.
3. Able to hear others without telling them what’s best for them and without making decisions for
them.
4. Able to allow others to express feelings without judgment.
5. Able to sit quietly with others when they can’t put their thoughts or feelings into words.
6. Able to accept others as they are.
7. Able to maintain confidentiality.
8. Able to seek comfort and support from others.
9. Able to draw on their own spirituality appropriately.
10. Reliable in keeping appointments and participating in BeFriender Ministry group sessions.
11. Able to work with program leaders and exercise sound judgment in making referrals.

Amount of time required
1. Training: 20 hours
2. Making visits: 4 hours/month (meeting once a week)
3. Meetings or continuing education: Twice a month for 2 hours
